Take A Chance On Me manselljill 9780755328208 Books

This is my favorite Mansell book. This book was a first author read for me. I now like Mansell's book so I'm trying out her other works.

This is Brit Lit. And it's got Mansell usual with 5+ character point of views. It is a little too much at times mostly because I wanted to know more about Cleo and Johnny. I loved their romance. A I was also wish that Johnny was more in the story. I still liked how well Jill is able to build these characters up so that they're likeable.

There is quite a bit of British humor that I really liked. I liked how Cleo (limo driver job) drove a has-been Australian soup star to all his locations while he was in town. The description of the little town of Channing Hill sounds like an ideal vacation place. I also liked the karma that befell on William Newman. I even disliked his name. A very posh Mamma's boy.

I've reread this book a few times now. Each time, the storyline is great and the characters are all likeable.

STORY BRIEF
Chloe loved being a student but changed and then dropped out of school because her peers made fun of her. Johnny was one of them. On a bet, he asked her for a date while others were hiding nearby. They laughed when she said yes. It's ten years later. Chloe has a nice looking boyfriend Will. She has a job as a limo driver, and she's good at it. Johnny became a famous artist. He returns to town for his father's funeral. He decides to stay until he can sell his father's home. Chloe has feelings for Johnny, but she hides them. Other women desire Johnny as well.

Chloe's neighbor and good friend Ash has a brilliant and funny mind. He is overweight and not good looking. He has a breakfast radio talk show. One woman falls in love with him at first sight, but Ash has eyes for another who does not feel the same.

Chloe's sister Abby discovers her husband has an eighteen year old child she never knew about. This snowballs into various things happening.

REVIEWER'S OPINION
I finished reading a different book Friday night which depressed me. On Saturday I was still depressed. I wanted to read something to cheer me up. I picked this - my first Jill Mansell book. It worked. By Sunday I was in a happier mood most of the day (when not in the middle of chores of drudgery). And I noticed more teasing and fun with my kids. Do I give credit to the book? Yes it gets credit for my happier mood; I'm not sure about credit for relating to my kids. But maybe.

In most romance novels (which I love), we see a love relationship developing, usually seeing inside the heads of both characters - watching them develop feelings. This does not happen here. Don't expect it. This is chick lit. We are inside the head of Chloe who desires Johnny, but we don't know who or if Johnny desires anyone. And that's ok. I enjoyed being in Chloe's world with her friends. I enjoyed their interactions. We are also inside other characters' heads. Some chick lit books have either annoyed me or not interested me enough to try more of those authors. Not so here. I want to read more of this author. A few times a situation was predictable or I had heard it before, but that was ok. I didn't mind. I also enjoy the fact that the author is British. Some of her word choices are fun for a change.

Romance lovers there are some happy romantic endings for different characters.

I enjoyed and kept thinking about Georgia (beautiful) who was attracted to Ash (brilliant funny mind but overweight and not good looking). On page 177 Georgia says "That is my idea of the perfect man...personality is way more important than looks. Give me someone who can entertain me every time. Trust me, I've been out with my share of pretty boys. You soon get bored with looking at them, gazing into their beautiful eyes, and admiring their perfect...I don't know, teeth and stuff. If they don't have what it takes to make me laugh, I'm not interested. It'd be like going out with a poster on your wall."

I liked Chloe's personality and her choices. She yearned for Johnny and was hurting at times, but she controlled it, didn't show it, and acted the good friend.

READING THE ENDING EARLY
When I was 60% through the book, I went to the end and read the last seven pages. I'm glad I did. I found that I could relax and enjoy the story more. It allowed me to pay more attention to certain subtleties and better imagine what might have been going on in Johnny's mind. I liked the book better when I knew the ending.

Occasionally I read the endings of books early on, so that might be a predictor as to whether or not this is for you. If it is, don't wait until the middle of the book. Read the end sooner than I did.

CAUTION SPOILER
One part was illogical to me. Johnny claimed he moved back to town to be near Chloe. So why didn't he say or do something or ask Chloe out? She did have a boyfriend for a short while, but later she didn't. Possibly because work and things kept interfering? Although this might be a weakness, I'll accept it because the rest of the story was fun and worthwhile.

DATA
Story length 412 pages. Swearing language strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language and content none. Setting current day mostly Channings Hill, England. Copyright 2010. Genre chick lit.
This was a fun story. You knew who everyone was going to end up with within the first few chapters, but it was still fun getting there. I could have done without Georgia's character though. She was pushy, self righteous, and annoying. I wish Tom could see her for what she really was, and I would have liked for Tom to stick up for his wife and try to see things from her point of view. If Georgia had gotten some sort of punishment in the end, I would have liked this book better. But instead, everyone loves her and her life goes perfectly. I think she ruined the book for me. Otherwise, it was a good read.
Okay sos this isn't mind blowing literature, but once in a while you have to slip in a book that is very good, and just relaxing, no too taxing. I have read four of her books so far. Actually the first sat on my bookshelf for six months. My sister in law had bought it for me when visiting from England last year. I didn't realize that jill Mansfield was a British author, so having left from across the pond over thirty years ago, it was a nice trip down memory lane with the places mentioned and the "british" words used. I now am totally hooked onthem, but try tp spread them out. Would be a great summer read. Highly recommend.
There are multiple relationship threads in this story although the one between Cleo and Johnny is the main one. But all the characters are well drawn and given enough attention to their story lines that you care for all of them. I loved Cleo because she is witty and self-possessed, not emotionally stupid like so many romance heroines are written that make you want to slap them. Cleo's flaws are more realistic without sacrificing her positive personality traits and she stands up for herself when needed. All in all, a very well written and enjoyable story.
This book would have been better if the story stayed focused on the two main characters there were three different story lines if it were me it would have focused on Cleo and Johnny and let the supporting characters be just that story support and background her sisters drama and her friend Ash's obsessive romance kind of stole from the time that could have been building a detailed romance between Cleo and Johnny instead of a spot about them here and a bit of a peek there. But enough of the critic I hate reading third person but barely noticed it in this book. Also it was a clean happy read packed with humor first book I have read in a bit that I didn't find a typo kudos to that and despite the multiple story lines all the characters were lovable and well developed and seriously she could have had three books out of this Abbie's story alone was humors and heart wrenching enough to be a standalone.
